In need of a good read

I’ve gotten into this bad habit of crawling into bed with my iPhone. I flip through twitter and end up reading about celebrity gossip and issues in the Middle East and Egypt. Apparently at the end of my day, I have very broad interests. And then I play solitaire for a while.

It’s not the best way to end my day, so I’m looking for a little guidance. Any one gotta good book recommendation?

Here’s the thing though, I’m kind of picky (and going through a phase right now – only happy stuff)
  • Nothing scary. No gory/grizzly murders. Zombies need not apply.
  • Nothing too emotional. No cute animals dying. No heart break. Nada.
Just something that makes me happy and want to cozy up in bed or on the couch on a rainy weekend day and read with a cup of tea.

Thank you in advance for your suggestions!

Ok Megan - let me think about this I recently read The Help by Kathyrn Stockett. It is pretty interesting, funny at times, and poignant as well. Two thumbs up from me. What else? You read the Twilight series didn't you? I am with you on the no zombies but this series is a GREAT read! There is my two cents I have not had that much time for books as of late so I will check back and maybe get some good ideas from YOU!!! Oh and one more GREAT series is The Hunger Games - sooooooo good. Maybe a little gorey for you my friend but seriously I could not put these books down - my family went without food, clothes, everything for a good week when I was devouring these books. There you go.

Gory - sorry typo! It does have some violence in it but it is just fascinating. Have I said how much I love these books enough yet - HUNGER GAMES - so so good! Sara will agree she got me into them.

I agree with the Hunger Games series. A little gory in places, but really a great read. Also, have you read Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet. Set here in Seattle, awesome book. Oh, and have you read Three Cups of Tea (speaking of tea)? He also has a second book out that I haven't read yet but I really enjoyed the first one. About building a school near the Pakistan Afghanistan border.

Warning! I have to say No Hunger Games for you right now. It will be too much but later on, it's a great series!

Fat of the Land is a great local read about a forgager.

I'll try to think of more. I've been reading too many gut-wrenching novels. They are great but not great recommendations for you :)

I'm in for Hunger Games -- it's entertaining YA fiction; complete escapism.

And I just finished Olive Kitteridge and L-O-V-E-D it! Not super uplifting but beautifully written and such a cozy, clever read.

"Major Pettigrew's Last Stand" was such a great book, perfect with tea. Any thing by Bill Bryson, especially "A Walk in the Woods." I just finished "The Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet" which takes place in Seattle in the 40's and was a light but good read. "Boarder Songs" by Jim Lynch (he's from Olympia and wrote the Highest Tide)was good too.

I'm also just finishing Olive Kitteridge. It's a very good book, but not really happy. I really loved The Help. I know you would like it as well. It's so, sooooooo good. Read The Help.

Meg - here comes your kiddy-lit loving friend. Hunger Games, yes, but I agree, maybe it is a not a read for you right now. I suggest that you read the Molly Moon series. You will have to go to the kids section of the library, but I know it is a series the 4th grade inner Meggy will love. I think she will appreciate the plucky heroine and her ability to interact in her ever interesting and changing world. Why not let her pick your books for a bit? Molly Moon's Book of Hypnotism is the first in the series. Check out the website here. I'm pondering other other titles. This is why I read so many kids books, they are adventurous, clever, interesting, and fun. The best part, they are usually not too scary, violent, depressing, or sad. Let kiddy lit be your boon!

I agree with April. The Help is a great book. I just read Clinton Kelly's Oh No She Didn't, and it was hilarious!!! I was busting up laughing, but it is a super fast read. I read it in one evening.

Here's my vote: go for non-fiction! Specifically, The Happiness Project, by Gretchen Rubin. It's all about how she set out to see if she could set happiness goals month-to-month and make herself a happier person by the end of the year. Really thought-provoking, in a good way! It inspired me to cut the fat, so to speak, and only make time for things/people that enrich my life. A very uplifting read!

Even if you don't decide to read her book, her blog is a great one to have in the ol' blog reader:

Take a look at Gail Carriger's Soulless. A really well written Victorian Vamp romp. There are three more in a series. Nancy Pearl even gave it rave reviews. Check out the online press.

I picked it up at an airport bookstore on a trip and while generally not my thing, that tiny little woman’s writing is so God damn good that she hooked me (qwerky, well built characters and she uses English as an offensive edged weapon…).

Water for elephants is also a good read and I recently read The Lady Matador's Hotel and enjoyed the characters and plot.
